This post is part 1 of 2, if not 3 because of all the people I’ve come across doing great work in gaming, tech, lit, etc to diversify and make our lives a bit better. Don’t fret if you are not listed, I’ve got another post coming next week with even more folks highlighted.  TL;DR, I know too many people doing great things.

This post originally appeared on my Patreon for a week, now I’m reposting at cypheroftyr.com for public consumption.  Thank you to everyone who has supported me at the $10 level and up, and don’t forget to send in post topics!

Spawn On Me Podcast:

EIC Kahlief Adams and Producer Cicero Holmes, along with their Minister of No Finance,Shareef Jackson welcome guests from all areas of gaming. They are trying to future proof both the show and their initiatives to make gaming more diverse and inclusive. You can support them monthly on Patreon, along with subscribing to them on Stitcher, iTunes and via RSS. Feed. You also catch them on the ESN network. Follow them on Twitter and Facebook.

#GamingLooksGood:

Gaming Looks Good is a semi-regular look at the diversity or lack thereof in games. Produced by Shareef Jackson, his videos often look at what’s missing or what’s being done well in newer games that are out and popular. He’s also written for Offworld, How Hip-Hop helped me learn to Code, and co-hosts Operation Cubicle along with JP Fairfield. Follow Shareef on Twitter, along with GamingLooksGood on twitter and YouTube.

Nerds Of Color Podcast We are a community of fans who love superheroes, sci-fi, fantasy and video games but are not afraid to look at nerd/geek fandom with a culturally critical eye.

Three years ago, spoken word artist Bao Phi eloquently and presciently summed up the Nerds of Color raison d’être in this column for the Star Tribune. Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+

The Learned Fangirl: is committed to highlighting and nurturing under-reported writing focused on media, technology, and online culture by providing access and opportunity for women and people of color to publish media and cultural critiques that are too often ignored by the mainstream media. Free from the dictates of commercial pressure, TLF is dedicated to creating an independent media space, for underrepresented writers and critics to publish challenging critiques and research focused on mass media, technology and society in general.

To further its mission to supporting the future development of writers’ careers, TLF, unlike most other similar online and print publications, is committed to writers retaining copyright in their work, allowing writers to further to grow ideas first sprouted at TLF. Donate to TLF

Black Girl Nerds:  Black Girl Nerds is a place for women of color with various eccentricities to express themselves freely and embrace who they are.  This is not a site exclusively for Black women.  It’s for ALL women who are just as nerdy as we are and the men who love and appreciate us.  I named this site Black Girl Nerds because the concept of Black women as geeky-dorky beings is somewhat of an anomaly.  It’s against the order of things in the “Black Girl” world.  We represent a wide array of diverse women who embrace all cultures and refuse to conform to the status quo.

This community does not have an exclusionary purpose.  The term “Black Girl Nerd” is not intended to be derogatory nor is it racially biased.  It is a term of endearment to all women like me who have been attached to a stigma that is not an accurate representation of my personality or my idiosyncratic behaviors. AlterConf: AlterConf is a traveling conference series that provides safe opportunities for marginalized people and those who support them in the tech and gaming industries. By highlighting the powerful voices and positive initiatives of local community members, we build hope and strengthen the community’s resolve to create safer, healthier spaces for everyone.

The conferences go beyond the limited definitions and basic discussions of diversity to create a deeper, more nuanced conversation. Each conference features a wide range of speakers delivering critical analyses of tech and gaming culture and presenting their vision for what our community can be.
