I had a chance to dig into an Early Access version of Man O’ War: Corsair today, and some of the devs even dropped by the stream!

Early Access opens up on 15 April, 2016 on Steam!

The game is gorgeous, the sound is amazing, well timed and ambient for what you run into on the high seas. You can make a female captain of your ship, however you can’t be brown (hopefully this will change in the final version), but that’s a good start.

Other feedback I had was more technical, like the appearance of a Galleon was a bit early against your wee ship & crew. A+ naming of it though, extra credit to my stream crew for getting my DA references. Behemoth AI needs a tweak or tether zone to not chase player so far from spawn point. Seriously it chased me from it’s spawn zone all the way back to a mission location! Also giant sea monster is giant.

Clarity of how to do combat in intro/training mission would be good too. I really struggled with how to aim beyond mere left and right. It seems that the tutorial will be updated on the next Early Access build but that was bit of a learning curve. Last thing is more diversity in Captain choices. Nice that I can be a lady Pirate Cap’n! However being brown, or having some body diversity would be great!

Overall I loved it, it was great fun playing it. I got to shoot a giant shark, be adventurous and run from a beastie! I’ll be keeping my eye on this title and picking it up when it’s released in full.  Full Early Access info under the cut.

Which races will we meet in Man O’ War: Corsair?
Humans, Orcs, Skaven, Dwarves, High Elves, Dark Elves and Chaos.

And which can I play?
During Early Access you will be able to play as a human in the campaign.
As races are made available through Early Access you will be able to indirectly order allies. These can be formed from friendly races.
On release there will be an alternative campaign available, playing as Chaos.
We are also developing a skirmish mode allowing you control of other races.

Will there be multiplayer?
Multiplayer will not be included in the initial Early Access launch. We aim to add a skirmish multiplayer mode as a later update.

How long will the game be in Early Access?
As long as it takes, but we’re aiming for around 4 months.

How often will you be updating the game?
We aim to release updates regularly, major ones once a month with smaller updates in between.

What do I do if I find a bug?
Please report all bugs found on the bugs forum. Instructions on what info to include to help us fix the bug as quickly as possible can be found here.

I think you should do <AMAZING FEATURE>, don’t you?
Your feedback is why we are doing Early Access. Please post any ideas for improvements to systems or new things you’d like to see in the game in the feedback forum on Steam.

Unfortunately we can’t add in everything that everyone wants, but we will take all your feedback on board.

Is there a demo?
There is no demo available for Man O’ War: Corsair.

All of our focus is going into what is a large project for us and while we would like to set up a demo version we have put all our team into the final product.

How will the full version differ from EA?
While we have the foundation of our game at Early Access launch, there are many currently planned features and content additions we will be adding over Early Access period. Apart from releasing the planned features below, will be looking to add community ideas into the game, the very reason we want to do Early Access!

Man O’ War: Corsair’s planned core features include, among many other things:

  • Sea based warfare – Engage in thrilling broadside battles and take command of your captain as you board enemy ships from an on deck perspective!
  • Huge game world to explore with over 50 ports
  • A huge variety of customisable vessel types and characters
  • Trade and fight with other Captains, vessels and ports
  • Hire wizards and other magical beasts to do your bidding
  • Command allies from different races and fight deadly enemies including –

Orcs, High Elves, Dwarfs, Dark Elves, Skaven, Pirates, Chaos, and Sea Monsters

  • Travel the huge environment day and night, and in all weathers.
  • Campaign Mode where you can play either as a Captain of Bretonnia, the Empire, or Chaos!
  • Skirmish mode where you can play as and against different Warhammer races

In addition to game fixes, tweaks, and performance improvements, mega iterative polishing, our support for Man O’War: Corsair won’t end with these features, we want this to be the start of something great………

What is the current State of EA?
Everything described on the full Features List has been developed to a basic playable state or further. We still have refinements and tweaks still to do. We are releasing in stages as we want the elements of the game we do release to be right, for the community to feel it’s right and then know we can release the next part!

We would rather show the community what we have and let them feed back sooner rather than later. We don’t want to work into things that the community hates!
